Dear Neighbors,
I’m excited to share some important news regarding the protection of fast food workers in our City. On April 2, the LA City Council voted unanimously to instruct the City Attorney’s Office to draft an extension of the Fair Work Week Ordinance for tens of thousands of workers in this industry.
Fast food workers are among the hardest-working individuals in Los Angeles, yet they often face numerous challenges. Many experience wage theft, losing up to $3,500 a year, and deal with unpredictable schedules that disrupt their lives and families. This policy is designed to tackle these issues head on; protecting workers from wage theft, ensuring fair scheduling, and bringing real change to a sector that urgently needs it.
As the Chair of the Economic Development & Jobs Committee and the author of the original Fair Work Week ordinance, I have been collaborating closely with my colleague, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, to expand protections for fast food workers. Our legislation includes a “Know Your Rights” training component designed to educate and empower workers by ensuring they fully understand their rights in the workplace.
We hope to have a report back later this year, with the goal to implement the policy in 2026. Stay tuned for updates as we continue this important journey together.
Thank you to every worker who stood up and spoke out—your courage and commitment to justice made this progress possible.
In Solidarity,
