The City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Street Lighting (BSL) is enhancing public safety and communication systems through fiber technology, aiming to improve efficiency and provide equitable high-speed internet access for public services and local businesses.
On Feb. 28, 2025, Councilmembers Curren Price and Tim McKosker introduced a motion directing the Economic Workforce Development Department (EWDD) and BSL, with support from the City Administrative Officer (CAO), to report on expanding fiber optic infrastructure in and around Jobs and Economic Development Incentive (JEDI) Zones.
The report will identify optimal expansion areas, assess impacts, and explore funding opportunities. It will propose a framework focused on enhancing public safety, supporting economic growth, and increasing digital access in underserved communities.
Integrating fiber optics into JEDI Zones represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen communication systems, boost access to digital tools, and support job creation.
Additionally, the report will outline BSL’s long-term infrastructure maintenance responsibilities, projected economic and employment benefits, and metrics to measure the project’s impact on digital equity. These insights will guide the City in effectively expanding its fiber network to deliver lasting public value.
