The City Council voted in favor of new limits on pretextual traffic stops by LAPD officers. The action requests that the Board of Police Commissioners consider new guidelines related to stops of motorists, bicyclists, or pedestrians for minor violations, except when the violation poses a significant risk to public safety.
For so many residents, these pretextual traffic stops have created distrust between the community and law enforcement. To mitigate these impacts and reduce the erosion of the public trust, the Council urged peace officers to capture the justification for stops on body worn cameras. This will bring greater transparency and understanding to those who experience such stops.
