The City Council approved a report from the Energy and Environment Committee relative to strengthening the City’s water conservation efforts for residential, industrial and commercial uses. The report calls on several City entities including the Department of Building and Safety, LA Department of Water & Power, Sanitation and other relevant departments to report back to Council with recommendations that will enhance equitable water conservation, identify existing conservation programs, create partnerships with local non-profits, propose code changes and more.
According to the report, climate scientists are predicting longer, more frequent and more severe droughts in the near future. In order to prepare for extreme drought and precipitation, the City has set a goal of obtaining 70 percent of its water from local sources by 2035 and the Bureau of Sanitation is proceeding with numerous projects to ensure its treatment plants can supply recycle water for local use. To reach these objectives, there is a need for continued efforts to reduce water consumptions. The departments are to report back within 60 days to the City Council with more recommendations.
