The City Council voted to approve three reports from the Civil Rights, Equity, Immigration, Aging and Disability Committee to effectively address wage theft and enhance worker protections. On an annual basis working Angelenos lose $1.4 billion to wage theft. Among the most affected are women, people of color and low-income families.
The reports directs the Chief Legislative Analyst (CLA), the Bureau of Contract Administration (BCA), City Attorney and several other departments to report back within 60 days on: an analysis and strategy plan to better support workers who have been subject to wage and civil right violations in the workplace; recommendations to increase authority and capability within BCA to enforce claims against employers overtime, break times, late pay and gratuities violations; and an analysis of current resources used to prosecute wage theft cases, as well as recommendations to address shortfalls to maintain efficient resolution to pending cases and outreach efforts.
