The LA City Council has approved a report from the Public Safety Committee directing the LA Department of Transportation (LADOT) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to initiate a pilot work plan within the Fiscal Year 2023-24 budget to address citywide street racing and takeovers. The plan aims to identify the costs for the engineering and enforcement components at the top five intersections in each LAPD Bureau.
Among the measures considered to deter racing are raised hardened centerlines, raised pavement markers, rumble strips, and the installation of gutters at intersections. In compiling a list of locations to participate in the program, LAPD conducted an extensive query between 2020 and 2022, revealing that the Department received over 19,000 calls for service regarding illegal racing and street takeovers, with increased numbers in the Central and South Bureaus.
Additionally, LADOT and LAPD were instructed to report to Council in six months to provide an analysis and evaluation of the pilot program to measure its effectiveness and identify issues. To read the report, please click here.
