On Feb. 25, the First Street Steps were officially named in honor of Council President Emeritus Herb J. Wesson, Jr. recognizing his years of dedicated service and lasting impact on Los Angeles. Celebrated at the Tom Bradley Tower, the tribute symbolizes the path he paved for a more just and inclusive city, one step at a time.
From raising wages for hotel workers to securing a citywide minimum wage, championing the Ban the Box initiative to helping launch the HHH ballot measure addressing homelessness with compassion and urgency, Council President Emeritus Wesson led with the people, for the people. His leadership uplifted our city’s most vulnerable, tackling economic inequality and advocating for those often left unheard.
“Now, every step at First Street serves as a reminder—not just of the battles he fought, but of the lives he empowered, the policies he shaped, and the foundation he built for a stronger, more equitable Los Angeles,” said Councilman Price.
