The LA City Council has approved an ordinance to extend eviction protections for tenants who adopted pets during COVID-19. Initially introduced at the start of the global health emergency, the pet protection policy was due to expire on Jan. 31, posing a risk of eviction for renters across the City of LA. In response to this, the Council voted to make the protections permanent to prevent the separation of pets and their owners and to alleviate overpopulation at the city’s six animal shelters.

According to the ordinance, landlords are prohibited from evicting tenants for adopting and housing a pet that was brought into the rental unit before Jan. 31, 2023. Any animals acquired after that date must adhere to the lease agreement. To read the ordinance, please click here
