The City Council approved a report from the Rules, Elections, and Intergovernmental Relations Committee relative to establishing the City’s position in support of Assembly Bill 645 (Friedman-Santiago-Ting). This bill would authorize a speed safety system pilot program in Los Angeles and surrounding areas by way of automated speed enforcement detectors on streets that are part of the high injury network. This policy takes into account equity and privacy provisions that include, but not limited to, warning notices, small fines, non-moving violations which add no points on driver’s license, etc. Studies have concluded that speed safety measures are an effective countermeasure to speeding and, in connection, reduced traffic collisions, deaths and injuries by as much as 70 percent in some cities. Additionally, any revenue collected must be used on program costs and/or the construction of traffic calming measures. To read the resolution, please click here.
