Following a recent independent report highlighting the success of Los Angeles’ Guaranteed Income (GI) pilot program, BIG:LEAP, Councilmember Price is pushing for a second round of GI funding.

In 2021, Councilmember Price proposed a $6 million GI initiative for District 9 residents, which quickly expanded into a $38 million citywide effort. The program went on to provide more than 3,200 households living in deep poverty with $1,000 in direct, no-strings-attached payments for one year, offering critical support to some of the city's most vulnerable residents.

On July 30, the City Council heard directly from the Center for Guaranteed Income Research at the University of Pennsylvania, highlighting positive trends the poverty alleviation initiative had on participants’ financial well-being, food security, and sense of community, along with a reduction in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).

BIG:LEAP not only provided vital support for participants in addressing health concerns, school expenses, childcare, and emergencies but empowered Angelenos to get out of survival mode and focus on being better parents, do more recreational activities with their children, start businesses and reclaim their power.

Councilmember Price has announced a commitment of $1 million from his discretionary funds to develop a new GI program. The proposed initiative will specifically target individuals experiencing IPV and Transitional Age Youth (TAY).
