RESTRICTING HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS NEAR SCHOOLS AND DAYCARE CENTERS

The LA City Council took up a second vote to amend section 41.18 of the Los Angeles Municipal Code ordinance to include the prohibition of homeless encampments setting up within 500 feet of all schools and daycare centers in the City. The ordinance passed with an 11-3 vote and will go into effect 30-days after Mayor Garcetti signs it. This legislation came in response to Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and the urgent need to ensure safe walkways for students while making sidewalks compliant with ADA regulations.
