On April 2, Council District 9 activated a new traffic signal at Vernon and Wadsworth, marking an important step toward improving safety in a part of the community where it was urgently needed.
The signal stands in memory of Derick Serrano, a 12-year-old student at George Washington Carver Middle School who was killed at this intersection while walking home from school.
Funded through $385,000 in Council District 9 discretionary dollars and delivered in record time, the project was completed with a clear purpose: to make this crossing safer for the students, families, and neighbors who rely on it every day.
With the signal now in place, the intersection is better equipped to support safe passage, especially for children traveling to and from school.
