Dear Neighbors,

As more than half a million Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) students return to class this week, District 9 is proud to announce completed upgrades through the Safe Routes to School program. These improvements across school zones in South Central are creating safer streets for students and families.

Together with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), we’ve lowered speed limits to 15 mph around dozens of CD 9 schools. Many campuses now have speed humps, while others feature redesigned intersections to help drivers slow down and protect students.

We’ve added more than 50 trained crossing guards at busy corners and put “No Right Turn on Red” restrictions on key corridors near schools. From Ricardo Lizarraga Elementary School to Bethune Middle School, and many more, these improvements are about helping every student travel to and from school safely.

Please remember to slow down in school zones, stay alert, and follow crossing guard directions. Small actions like these can save lives.

In Solidarity,
