The City Council approved a Public Works Committee report designating the intersection of 47th Street and Avalon Boulevard as the “Conner Johnson Funeral Home Square.” This once historic mortuary was a key business and location for the Black community in South Los Angeles. During the 1960’s, civil rights leader and activist, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Los Angeles attorney Crispus A. Wright attended the chapel marking its significance. Since then, the Mortuary has been converted into the Rejected Stone Christian Fellowship Church founded by Pastor Walter Kent Davis in 2002. Under the Pastor’s leadership, the church has founded youth and recreational organizations to provide resources to the surrounding community. To recognize the Church’s many contributions, a permanent ceremonial sign will also be erected in their honor. To read more about the dedications, please click here.
