Dear Neighbors,

Today was a truly special moment as I had the honor of leading a presentation before the Los Angeles City Council on the eve of Juneteenth.

Reflecting on this occasion, I’m reminded that five years ago, amid the civil unrest of 2020, I introduced a motion to officially recognize Juneteenth as a holiday in our City.

I was proud to help bring the spirit of Juneteenth into chambers because it’s more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a legacy we carry forward, celebrating resilience, liberation, and the unbreakable spirit of our community.

The program began with a powerful rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Faith Wroten White, a South LA native, Compton teacher, and autism advocate.

In a special tribute, we introduced a commissioned art piece by local artist Brandon Barry Brown, born on Juneteenth himself. His artwork, which is featured throughout our Juneteenth weekend events, captures the feelings of empowerment and hope that define this day. See video by clicking the image above.

A special thank you to the Mafé Ensemble, an artist collective from Leimert Park, blending traditional West African music with fresh West Coast vibes.

You can catch Faith and the Mafé Ensemble at our  3rd Annual Juneteenth Block Party on Saturday.

To celebrate Juneteenth, my Office is hosting a series of events this weekend.

On Friday, June 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., join us at South Park Recreation Center for a tribute to Barry White, who helped save the park and whose legacy we honor with a rededication, art unveiling, and a fun sock hop with free food and music. See the flyer below for more details.

On  June 21, from 12 to 5 p.m., our 3rd Annual Juneteenth Block Party on Central Avenue promises family fun with a kids zone, food trucks, a car show, live music, and vendors. See the flyer below for more details.

On Sunday, June 22, from 2 to 5 p.m., we’ll close the weekend with “Community Experience in the Park,” featuring performances by Keke Wyatt and other local artists, along with community resources and free refreshments.

All three events are free and open to everyone. In times like these, when pain and sadness seem overwhelming, it’s more important than ever to gather, heal, and celebrate our shared humanity.

Happy Juneteenth!
