A Walk Through History

Councilmember Price led a tribute to the rich history of Central Avenue on Feb. 14, with a presentation that took Angelenos on a journey through time in Council District 9.

In celebration of African American Heritage Month, the event also honored longstanding local institutions—Bowers & Sons Cleaners, 27th Street Bakery, and Benjamin J. Bowie American Legion Post 228—recognizing their deep-rooted contributions to the South Central community.

Guests were treated to a powerful photo exhibition, capturing the area's rich heritage, as well as an insightful presentation by Alison Rose Jefferson, an Independent Historian and Heritage Conservation Consultant, who shed light on the corridor’s lasting impact.

“Central Avenue holds a story that too few know—a tale of fortitude, innovation, and cultural influence that has helped shape Los Angeles,” said Councilmember Price. “This is Central Avenue—a community powered by its people, its places, and its history.”
