What You Need To Know About Green Bin Deployment
Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) has deployed over 65,000 green bins across the City of Los Angeles to aid single-family and multi-family residences in organic recycling services.

The deployment comes as a response to California’s composting law, SB 1383, which now legally requires residents to separate food waste (food, food-soiled paper, yard waste, etc.) from the black trash bin container. This initiative will aid residents and LASAN in lowering organic waste in landfills by 75 percent, significantly reducing methane gas emissions in the environment.

An electronic request form, available on the LASAN website, allows residents to request fewer or smaller bins to help reduce space impacts. The Solid Resources (Trash) Fee is not reduced if a smaller container is selected or a shared bin is utilized. 60-gallon and 30-gallon containers are also available and the 90-gallon green container remains immediately available upon request through LASAN.

The City of LA’s curbside residential collection program includes a 90-gallon green bin (food, food-soiled paper, and yard waste), a 90-gallon blue bin (recyclables), and a 60-gallon black bin (trash). Should ratepayers decline the green bin, residents are still legally required to separate food waste from the black trash bin.

The green bin will be collected weekly on the regular trash day, and the contents will be composted in a commercial facility. The compost produced will be used by farmers to grow organic products.
